Comment from Dulas in relation to the Welsh Government’s announcement of further funding for ARBED.
Dulas, the Mid-Wales based renewable energy solutions company, welcomes the Welsh Government’s announcement of further funding for ARBED, the strategic energy programme.
The company has had significant involvement in phase 1 through the installation of solar PV systems on 40 homes and subsequent supply with technical support for the remaining 210. These installations provide free daytime electricity for Housing Association tenants and training and employment for local contractors in a growing business sector. Many of these have gone on to set-up their own businesses serving their local communities.
Alongside this significant European funding, which is great news for social housing providers in Wales, the picture across the whole of the UK is a stark contrast.
The UK Government’s plans for the solar PV feed-in tariff only to be paid at viable rates for very energy efficient buildings. Much of the housing stock in Wales will not, even with significant investment in energy efficiency measures, achieve these standards. This will mean that families already in energy poverty will be at the mercy of rising energy costs as householders will not be able to afford to install the solar PV systems that could draw them from this trap.
Mike Clay, Marketing Manager at Dulas said “This is great news for the green economy in Wales and of course for the residents that will directly benefit from the improvements. However, even more meaningful improvements can be done for those living in older houses if the UK Government can be persuaded not to implement the challenging ‘energy efficiency’ clause to the feed-in tariff scheme.”
