                        19/10/11

Give to charity for nothing – you’re having a laugh!

Size of Wales is launching its pioneering fundraising idea at the Wales Millennium Centre with the help of First Minister for Wales, Carwyn Jones and ITV’s ‘Show me the Funny’ runner-up Dan Mitchell. For every ‘like’ the charity receives on Facebook, Size of Wales partners will donate £1 to the charity - enough to save an area of endangered rainforest the size of a rugby pitch.

The First Minister said: “The Welsh Government whole heartedly supports the Size of Wales project. Our Wales for Africa Team are working with the initiative to plant one million trees in the Mbale region of Uganda to help reach the ‘Size of Wales’ target. I urge everyone to get involved and click the simple ‘like’ button on facebook to reach this inspiring and extremely important goal.”

The charity aims to help protect an area of rainforest the size of Wales as part of a national response to climate change. Size of Wales has enlisted the help of comedian, Dan Mitchell to urge communities all over Wales to get involved by joining Welsh tribes online to help save rapidly declining tropical forest in Africa and South America, and support the communities living there.

Rising Welsh comedian Dan Mitchell, from Carmarthen said: “It is a great initiative that will see Wales be the first country in the world to protect an area of rainforest equivalent to its size. People ‘like’ things on facebook all the time, but here it helps to protect rainforests around the world. The more people who then go on to start or join tribes, the easier it will be to raise the £2 million needed to protect 2 million rugby pitches worth of rainforest – the same size of our nation”

The launch of The Welsh Tribe Challenge will see people coming together in online tribes to help protect trees, people and wildlife in some of the world’s poorest countries. Tribal leaders with the most members and rainforest saved will win an exclusive t-shirt from Cardigan-based designers, Howies.

Steve Smith, the tribe leader for Cardiff county said: “This is a great way of getting the people of Wales involved with environmental issues and I hope that as many people in Cardiff as possible will join our tribe to make it the best in Wales!”

Hannah Scrase, Director of Size of Wales added: “Our partners have been very generous by agreeing to donate one pound for every like on Facebook and we urge people to do so. We need to protect two million hectares of rainforest, so if everyone in Wales ‘likes’ our Facebook page we will reach our goal.”

“Each £1 will go directly towards rainforest projects in countries such as Uganda and Madagascar. Hopefully people can join their local tribe or even start their own and show the world what we can all do to help.”

The Size of Wales is also asking people to join a flash mob at Plas Roald Dahl/Oval Basin in Cardiff Bay on the Sunday 30 October at 12:00pm for their viral video to help drive support for the charity.

Please also note that the new website will not be live until midday 19 October 2011.
