                        30/09/11

Pupils compete to name their new school

The state-of-the-art school will be located on the site of the old steelworks in Ebbw Vale and is running a competition for students who will attend the school from September 2012 to name the facility.

Children and young people aged three to sixteen years old will attend this new and innovative school. The winning name and motto will be used on everything related to the school including the sign on the building, the website, school prospectus, newsletters and stationery.

A new school in Blaenau Gwent is searching for a name and motto, and is calling on pupils across the area to come up with it. L to R: Calum Parfitt, Ebbw Vale Comprehensive School; Katherine Bruten, Glyncoed Comprehensive School; Katherine Jones, Pontygof Primary School; Ffion Collins, Waunlwyd Primary School; Councillor Jen Morgan; Blaenau Gwent Council’s Children and Young People’s Participation Officer Dave Rees.

The competition is open to children and young people attending Waunlwyd Primary School, Pontygof Primary School, Ebbw Vale Comprehensive School and Glyncoed Comprehensive School.

Councillor Jen Morgan, the Chair of the temporary governing body said:

“This competition is a great way of involving our children and young people in a school which will very soon be theirs and future generations to come. I work very closely with pupils in my role as a school governor and I am proud to be a part of this new school which will provide a modern learning environment for young people and the local community.

“From speaking to the pupils I know they are all really excited about the competition and the new school and I think the judges will have a very tough job – good luck to you all and I look forward to congratulating the winner.”

Councillor Des Hillman, Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, said: “The Council’s strategy to create learning communities will make sure local people are supported in gaining the skills they need to succeed, right here in Blaenau Gwent.

“It is important to engage young people at an early stage and naming the new school will involve them and give them a great deal of responsibility. This is an opportunity for someone to leave a lasting mark on education in Blaenau Gwent.

“We are on a journey of educational improvement here in Blaenau Gwent and this new school is just one of a package of improvements the Council together with the Education Commissioners is putting together to achieve the best outcomes for our children and young people.”

Not only will the winner be credited with naming the new school, but they will also receive a prize donated by the contractors, Leadbitter, who are building the school. Six names will be shortlisted and the pupils from the four schools involved will be given the chance to vote on their favourite name.

The three to sixteen school will be a modern facility with up-to-date renewable energy installations making it as energy efficient as possible. There will be brand new soft and hard play areas as well as 21st Century IT access.

Entries must be submitted before the 31st October 2011, so get your thinking caps on to make a difference to your school and community.

Students can send their name suggestions to newschoolname@cazbah.biz or send them to the following address:
