New figures reveal almost half of all headteachers in Wales can speak Welsh
Drawing on its Register, the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) publishes regular statistics on the teaching profession, including information on the number of headteachers who can speak Welsh.
Based on the information now available, the organisation estimates the proportion of headteachers able to speak Welsh is now at least 42% - double the percentage of Welsh speakers in the wider population, as recorded nationwide in the last published census.
The figures show a similarly encouraging trend among teachers generally, with 32% of Wales’ 38,770 registered teachers declaring themselves able to speak Welsh.
The new figures were published within the annual statistics digest of the GTCW, which regulates the profession in Wales, promotes high standards among teachers and advises Welsh Government ministers on issues affecting teaching.
Gary Brace, chief executive of GTCW, explained that the professional body has been capturing an increasing amount of information on Welsh-speaking capability among teachers and headteachers with each passing year.
“Although there are still some gaps where individuals haven’t told us whether or not they speak Welsh, we still have a very clear picture of the linguistic profile of the profession.
“The headteacher data suggests schools are in a strong position to give leadership to Welsh language development, which means that the influence of the language is now being felt beyond Welsh-medium and bilingual schools,” he said.
