Make Welsh summers pieces of history with People’s Collection Wales
UK domestic visitors spent almost 30 million nights in destinations throughout Wales between January and September last year according to a recent UK tourism survey, spending an impressive £1,237 million. Now visitors and locals alike are being urged to share their memories and photographs online at People’s Collection Wales.
The People’s Collection Wales is acontemporary, bilingual website dedicated to sharing the history and experience of Wales and its people with the world. The Collection is a constantly growing resource for the people of Wales to learn about their history, and anybody can submit content in a variety of formats.

Nearly 30,000 items- from old photographs to video stories- can be found in the Collection. Uploading an item to People's Collection Wales is easy and can be done in three steps. Simply go to the home page, create a login and password, and then upload your item. Your holiday memories will then appear on the website.
The hope is that everyone from former Butlins redcoats in Barry and Pwllheli to songstress Katherine Jenkins will upload content to help capture a true picture of holiday and leisure in Wales throughout the years.
The former Butlins camps were hugely dominant holidaying destinations in their time and could accommodate more than 13,000 people a week at their peak. The Neath-born mezzo-soprano, famously championed the picturesque Gower retreat Three Cliffs Bay for a nationwide ITV competition to find Britain’s best view. Port Eynon, another Gower beach has recently claimed the prize for Britain’s favourite beach.
Materials that could illustrate holidays taken at these destinations and across the whole of the country would enrich the People’s Collection, which is owned by and contributed to by the people of Wales. All holiday related content is welcomed in the Collection.
Rheinallt Ffoster-Jones of People’s Collection Wales said: “People’s Collection Wales belongs to the people and will grow and become even better as more and more become involved in its development.
“Content about how Welsh people have spent their holiday and leisure time throughout the years is hugely valuable. Wales is an area of outstanding natural beauty recognised throughout the world. Photographs could highlight not only changes in the type of visitors, recreational activities and types of businesses, but economic change, culture and attitudes.”
If you are a regular visitor to the area, or a local who has witnessed the evolution of tourism in the country and have photographs of summers gone by, then your content could shape how Wales and its history is understood.
