Experts to get a sustainable perspective on wellbeing

Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales, a not-for profit, networking organisation which promotes sustainable development, is hosting the event at the Royal Hotel in Cardiff. The day will look at wellbeing, which the Welsh Government describes as a positive physical, social and mental state, as a sustainable development issue. Wellbeing is considered a key indicator of sustainable development in Wales.

The event is open to all and will feature an interactive debate around the different views on wellbeing including sustainability, mental health, the economy and environment and looking at how organisations can be responsible for improving societal and individual wellbeing. Cynnal Cymru will consider how the anticipated diverse perspectives of delegates can be fed into policy advice.

High profile speakers and experts in a variety of fields including environment, health and economy will be leading discussions on the day including John Griffiths AM Minster for Environmental & Sustainable Development, Peter Davies, Wales’ Commissioner for Sustainable Futures and Dafydd Thomas, the coordinator for the Wellbeing Wales Network.

Dafydd Thomas, coordinator for Wellbeing Wales Network said: “There has been a lot of political and community interest in wellbeing in Wales, with the rest of the UK following suit. Traditionally government’s have measured their own success using measures like ever increasing GDP, but people and institutions have realised that such measures don’t really tell the whole story or give decision makers the necessary information on where to focus their efforts.”

“This conference is a piece in a bigger jigsaw that helps us see what matters to the people of Wales and what practical steps organisations can take themselves to improve everyone’s wellbeing, both now and in the future.  When we understand that, we can start to develop a common cause we can all work towards.”

Roz Robinson, acting executive director, Cynnal Cymru said: “Our annual conference is centred around the increasingly important issue of wellbeing and what it means to different people and communities. The Welsh Government has listed wellbeing as the 5th indicator of sustainable development and the conference will include diverse opinions from the world of business, community, economy, environment and health.

“We have a number of very accomplished and relevant speakers leading the discussion and debating common understandings of wellbeing and looking at how these tie into making Wales a more sustainable place to live.”
