                        02/06/11

Vale woman urges families to make a difference and foster

A Vale of Glamorgan carer is urging families across Cardiff and the Vale to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children and consider becoming a foster carer or Parenting Assessment specialist during Fostering Fortnight 2011 (16th-29th May).

Kim Ovenstone works as a specialist parent assessment carer for independent fostering agency Pathway Care.

                        Pathway Care Kim Overstone

Throughout Fostering Fortnight Kim and Pathway Care are aiming to highlight the vital work carers do to help young mothers and their children regain self esteem and build a life for the future.

The dedicated Parenting Assessment Service has been specifically designed by Pathway Care to provide young and at risk mothers with the essential skills needed for raising their young children. The service, new to Wales, has been developed over the past ten years in SW England and has an outstanding track record helping young mothers and their children in specialised areas such as, individual living skills and child protection issues

Since becoming a more specialist carer two years ago Kim has supported four young mothers. In her role Kim welcomes mothers and their children into her home for a minimum 12 week period. During this time, she provides a caring environment for mums that may be troubled or in need of guidance.

Speaking of her role Kim said: “The aim of the placements is to provide the mothers with the necessary skills needed to live independently. I observe each young mother on a daily basis, and am there to offer support and a helping hand in any way I can.

“I try to provide the mums with practical advice on parenting that I have gained from many years of childcare experience, but Pathway Care provide plenty of support too.”

Kim supports the mothers as they get to grips with the basics of child care, offering advice on everything from nappy changing to cooking healthy meals and washing clothes.

Kim comments: “This is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had, it’s all about helping young mothers build a strong basis for a healthy relationship between mother and child.

“It’s fantastic to see the relationship develop. I often keep in touch with the young mothers to see how well they are getting on.

“Currently there is a shortage of foster carers inWalesand a considerable lack of Parent and now Child, and Parent Assessment Carers, like myself. Parenting Assessment Carers provide support in the early stages of motherhood, and can prevent children being placed in care further down the line. Without more assessment placements being available in the region, some mothers could face being placed far from their home, putting a huge strain on the development of their relationship with their child.”

A final assessment report is written after 12 weeks and helps decide if the parent has gained necessary skills to look after their child independently. The families will then be helped to find their own living arrangements.

Judith Rees, director forWalesfor Pathway Care, said:  “Kim has opened her home to young mothers to support those who need help and guidance at the early stages of family life. Her support is life-changing for those individuals in need.

“We are desperately searching for more carers in the Vale of Glamorgan and acrossWales. Fostering Fortnight is an important reminder of that shortage and we urge those interested in foster caring, whatever your circumstances to get in touch and help shape the future of young families in their area.”

A career in foster care offers many benefits including competitive rates of pay and flexible working.
