Dalata Hotel Group to create 100 jobs with the opening of the £25m Maldron Hotel Cardiff

Since its inception in 2007 by former Jurys Doyle CEO Pat McCann, Dalata Hotel Group has developed a network of 21 three, four and five star hotels across Ireland, including eight in Dublin.   Maldron Hotels is a division of Dalata Hotel Group which operates and manages ten Maldron Hotels and eleven prestigious Partner Hotels in key locations throughout Ireland including Dublin, Cork and Galway.

The group’s first UK hotel, set to open on May 16th, has been emerging on the St Mary’s Street skyline in the heart of the city.  The 216 room development represents the first step in the Group’s plans for hotels across the mainland and will be the largest city centre hotel in Cardiff.  Dalata plan to follow the Cardiff hotel with additional hotel developments in key locations throughout the U.K.

The 12-storey hotel, which is described as a superior city centre establishment was developed by Rush Developers and built by McAleer and Rushe.  The hotel will offer excellent business facilities including a dedicated floor of meeting rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property.  Each of the 216 guest rooms are air-conditioned and include lap-top safes and flat screen TVs.  Funding for the ambitious project was secured with Cardiff-based Julian Hodge Bank and many local contractors and suppliers were involved in the fourteen month construction project.

Pat McCann, who brought the Jurys Hotel to the Welsh capital in 1994, said:

“I’m confident that the Maldron Hotel Cardiff will provide a significant boost to the Cardiff economy in terms of tourism and job creation. The city has dramatically developed over the time I’ve been working in it.  Through becoming a seat of government and with developments such as Cardiff Bay and St.David’s 2, the city has gained more and more international recognition.

“Strong comparisons can be drawn between Cardiff and Dublin, as it has a thriving leisure market at weekends and a strong corporate market during the week.  We will be looking to tap into this with competitive pricing and an outstanding product and service. For me, the city offers huge potential so it made sense for our first UK development to be here.

“The hotel will not only be a popular destination for visitors, enjoying the city’s shopping, sport, entertainment, heritage and  many other attractions but we hope will be a magnet for a whole host of corporate events and prestigious business conferences.

“We look forward to developing successful partnerships with the local business community and there is a big opportunity for local suppliers to work with us. Emma Dalton, General Manager of the hotel and her team look forward to becoming part of this community in the months and years to come. Maldron Hotel Cardiff will enhance the city’s skyline and benefit the continued economic growth of one of Europe’s youngest capital cities.

“We are confident there is room in the Cardiff market for a hotel which can offer both business and leisure guests competitive prices and outstanding service. The announcement of ambitious plans to develop a Central Business District in the city, so close to the hotel, confirms that Cardiff was the right move.”

Austin Kennedy, risk director at Julian Hodge Bank said: “As specialists in commercial property funding, we are very pleased to see this project nearing completion and soon to open for business. Sited close to much of what Cardiff has to offer the business community and visitors, the hotel now forms part of the city’s bold new skyline. It marks the first significant investment in St Mary’s Street for many years and we wish owners Rush (Central) Ltd and Maldron Hotels every success.”

Maldron Hotel Cardiff opens to the public on the 16th May 2011
