                        13/04/11

Aspiring soldiers armed with words and numbers

The brothers have attended the specialist college based in the capital since October 2010 in a bid to hone their key skills in reading, writing and maths to maintain the family tradition of a career in the army.

The MPC offers a specially designed curriculum aimed at preparing young people for a career in the armed forces by combining academic and physical training while providing qualifications which will benefit each student throughout life.

During their time at the college the brothers have been commended for their commitment to their learning having been awarded for their outstanding performance as well as being appointed section commanders.

Rhys and Ryan Wood take part in one of the innovative classes delivered by the Military Preparation College to equip young people with basic skills and prepare them for a life in the armed forces.

Thanks to this dedication, the twins are well on their way to fulfilling their ambition of joining the Royal Welsh Regiment and following in the footsteps of their grandfather, father and uncle, all of whom served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, now incorporated in the Royal Welsh.

Speaking of their time at the college Rhys said: “We are both determined to continue the family tradition and enlist in the army.

“The skills and knowledge we have gained here will be vital to us not just during the military selection process and our career in the army but in any career we choose after army life.”

Founded in 1999 the college has recently been awarded a prestigious Basic Skills Quality standard thanks to its commitment to providing students such as Rhys and Ryan with the basic skills necessary to flourish in a military or civilian career.

Since its inception the college has helped many hundreds of youngsters gain the necessary qualifications and skills in preparation for a life in the forces, while helping students to overcome their difficulties with reading, writing and maths.

The MPC uses innovative techniques, linked to military training, to capture the youngsters’ interest in improving their skills with words and numbers. Lessons are based on a military scenario and taught with visual aids to hold attention levels. Other classes combine physical exercise with the delivery of key skills. For example, students are often asked to complete times tables while running.

The college joins only a handful of learning providers across south Wales to be recognised for their efforts in tackling Wales’ basic skills deficit which is believed to affect  440,000 pre cent of the adult population in literacy and 990,000 (53 per cent) in numeracy skills, stopping them from gaining good quality employment.

This commitment to obtaining the standard has been recognised by recent figures showing the MPC as third highest learning provider in Wales for the delivery of basic skills.

Founder of the MPC, Huw Lewis MBE, added: “We are pleased to have been awarded the standard, it is a great boost for the college in our continued pursuit of excellence.

“With youth unemployment at an all time high in Wales it is important that we not only prepare students for a prospective career in the armed forces but provide skills which will benefit them throughout life.

“Over the past 12 years we have been dedicated to providing quality education provision to young people from across south Wales, to be recognised for in such a way is a huge boost for the college.”

Since its formation the college has seen over 3000 students progress into further education, training or employment. Although many progress into the armed forces there is no obligation to join the military.

The college was founded by Huw Lewis MBE in 1999, since that time it has seen over 90% of student’s progress to full time employment or further education. The MPC boasts 12 locations across Wales and the south of England.
