Calzaghe and Bluebirds lend a hand in search for Foster Carers
A group of local foster carers has teamed up with a host of famous faces including world champion boxer Joe Calzaghe and Cardiff City Football Club, to release mark the urgent need for foster carers in Cardiff and the surrounding areas.
200 balloons were released by Calzaghe and Over The Rainbow star Sophie Evans from the Cardiff City Stadium, at half time during Cardiff’s 4-1 win over Derby County in a bid to encourage people in Cardiff to consider fostering as a viable career option.

South Wales-based Pathway Care says there is currently a shortage of 750 foster carers in Cardiff and across Wales.
The balloon release and partnership with Cardiff City marks the launch of a year-long marketing drive by Pathway Care under the banner of “Love to Make a Difference”. The campaign will drive home the need for more carers as well as highlighting the career opportunities presented by fostering, along with excellent remuneration and expenses.
Cardiff City chief executive Gethin Jenkins said: “Pathway Care represent a great cause and, as recent winners of the Football League Family Club of the Year, we are only too happy to support their bid to increase the levels of foster carers in Cardiff. We’d encourage all our supporters to consider if they or anyone within their network of friends and relatives could foster.”
Pathway Care has a planned programme of events for 2011 to enable anyone interested to find out more about fostering and to encourage the spread the message about the desperate need for foster carers in Cardiff.
Barrie Lewis, Wales recruitment manager of Pathway Care said: “We are extremely grateful to Cardiff City for supporting our Love to Make a Difference campaign. We hope that the balloons will be a poignant marker of the challenges we face in recruiting foster carers in the Cardiff and south Wales areas.
“South Wales has some of the highest unemployment figures in the UK and as the area is hit further by public sector cutbacks we would encourage those affected to consider fostering. Foster carers come from all cultures, backgrounds and include couples with or without children, single people, divorced people and lone parents and we’re interested to hear from anyone that has a spare room and can make a real difference to a child’s life.”
Pathway Care is offering a prize to the person that finds the balloon that has travelled the furthest from the Cardiff City Stadium. If you find a Pathway Care, Love to Make a Difference branded balloon enter the details at www.pathwaycare.com.
