Skilled Welsh Talent Begin Bid for World Glory
For some it will be a bid to be best in the country, but for others, it could lead all the way to world glory at a global skills challenge in Germany two years from now.
The trainees and newly-qualified individuals are taking part in more than 30 events between now and the end of July as part of the skillscompetition Wales programme - backed by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Social Fund - and WorldSkills UK competitions.
Some of these demanding contests at colleges and training centres will act as feeders for WorldSkills 2013 in Leipzig, Germany, where over 1,000 of the most skilled young workers from more than 50 countries will battle it out over four days, before an audience of 150,000 people.

Contestants at skillscompetition Wales events will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of eight Welsh competitors who won gold medals at WorldSkills UK competitions in 2010 and two individuals who are currently battling for the right to represent the UK at the international WorldSkills 2011 event, which will be hosted by London in October this year.
Talented Welsh people will be seeking to prove themselves in dozens of different skill areas, from traditional occupations such as catering, construction, auto mechanics and hairdressing and in new areas including web development, software applications and computer aided design. They will also pit their skills against each other in highly-specialised areas such as aeronautical and marine engineering.
The competitions follow a strict format, which tests the competitors’ skills to the limit in tightly controlled conditions under the watchful eye of some of the most experienced experts in the respective fields.
There are still opportunities for ambitious individuals to enter competitions scheduled to take place over the coming weeks and months at www.worldskillsuk.org/wales. The closing date for entries is 24 March.
Lesley Griffiths, Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation and Skills said: “For Wales to succeed and prosper, we need the skills of our workforce to match and exceed those of UK and international competitors.
“Participating in the WorldSkills programme enables our young people to benchmark their skill levels against counterparts globally and to strive for continuous improvement across dozens of disciplines and occupations. Many have distinguished themselves in the past and I’m confident they will do so again this time around. I also applaud the colleges and training providers who host WorldSkills events and showcase the excellent skills development facilities we have here in Wales.”
