Climate Change Champion urges community to save Wales, one wash at a time
Hannah Jewell, 16, was recently appointed as one of five Climate Change Champions for Wales by the Assembly Government. Hannah visited Posh Wosh launderette to encourage her local community to reduce their energy and hot water use by only running full loads of washing.

The Energy Saving Trust advises that half load settings usually use more than half the energy of a full load setting. So by doing two half loads you'll use more energy than doing one full one
Throughout 2011, Hannah, who attends Argoed High School in Mold will be busy communicating 11 actions that people in her community can do to reduce their carbon footprint. Hannah is urging locals to pledge to at least three of the actions, such as avoiding half loads of washing and using a washing up bowl instead of running the tap when doing dishes. People can get involved at www.walescarbonfootprint.gov.uk/11actions
Posh Wosh will also be spreading the message about how heating water is a major use of energy to their customers. The Energy Saving Trust claims that washing clothes at 30 oc instead of a higher temperature can use around 40% less electricity.
Climate Change Champion Hannah, said: “Doing one less clothes wash a week and using a washing up bowl instead of running a tap are really simple actions that everyone can do without disrupting their lives. From 2011, Wales has ambitious targets of reducing our carbon emissions by 3% each year and everyone can play their part in helping us achieve this.
“I don’t think people realise how many simple ways they can reduce their carbon footprint and being mindful of how much water, especially hot water, you use is just one of them.”
While meeting owners Michael and Pauline Forrest, Hannah got to speak to some of the local users of the launderette about reducing their carbon footprint.
Pauline Forrest, owner of Posh Wosh said: “We are very community focussed here and thrilled to be supporting a campaign to help Wales reduce its carbon footprint. It is important to make people more aware of the water they use and the energy they waste. Avoiding half loads will reduce water usage and really help to reduce your carbon footprint.”
Hannah is hoping to link up with her local community over the coming year in order to help spread the positive message about actions that everyone can do to help tackle climate change.
