Former teacher strengthens specialist trainer’s team

Gwawr, from Miskin in Pontyclun, will focus, in particular, on delivering Welsh-language tuition at Portal’s facilities across Wales, as well as designing a number of new professional development courses for educationalists and youth workers.

Portal provides specialist training to help teachers and other education professionals address a range of classroom issues, from managing challenging behaviour and raising classroom standards to engaging and motivating young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs).

Welsh speaker Gwawr, 36, has more than 15 years experience teaching in large comprehensive schools across Wales, including a period as Assistant Head teacher and Head of the Bilingual Faculty and Welsh Department at Treorchy Comprehensive School.

The range of new courses she is introducing tackles common concerns facing schools, including, increasing the learner voice, raising boys’ educational attainment and promoting bilingualism and the Welsh dimension.  Gwawr and her colleague Andy Henderson, who will be delivering the training, are also introducing a special course to help Head teachers and schools prepare for Estyn Inspections.

Gwawr said: “There is a clear need for bespoke training for teachers covering a range of topics that affect daily life in the classroom.  Teaching is an extremely demanding and increasingly stressful job.  Portal Training allows me to share experiences and resources from the last 15 years of teaching and ideas gleaned from extensive research.  As a teacher, I wanted to attend courses that would present innovative new ideas and resources, ones I could implement within the classroom the following day. I always keep this in mind when researching and designing courses.”

Demand for Welsh-medium courses has been growing steadily and, today, half of all Portal courses are delivered in the language.

In addition to the new appointment, Portal Training has expanded its service, and is now offering training facilities in Cardiff, Llanelli and Caernarfon as well as bespoke courses at clients’ site of choice such as Scotland and London.

Gareth Davies, Director of Portal said: “Gwawr’s experience adds a new dimension to what we offer.  In addition to our standard range of behaviour and motivational courses, we’re now able to tailor our training to the specific needs of schools and teachers.”

“With Gwawr onboard we can help schools tackle the problems that really matter, equipping teachers with the skills and resources they need to run effective programmes and classrooms.”
