The Grove goes green for Halloween

A St. David's pub is going green for Halloween in a bid to put the spooks up the UK's smallest city - while reducing its carbon footprint at the same time.

On Saturday (31 October 2009), The Grove on High Street will dim the lights in its Orchard Restaurant to save on carbon emissions while lighting candles to create a spooky atmosphere.

Chef James Hogarth Jones will add to the atmosphere by serving up some devilish dishes including ghoulash, devilled whitebait, rib eye steak and blue vein cheese and ice scream.

The Brains pub and hotel, which is taking part in the Welsh Assembly Government's Climate Change Challenge, is switching off its lights in order to contribute to a reduction in its carbon footprint.

If everyone in Wales switched off unnecessary lights, the Energy Saving Trust estimates we could save over £8m on our bills and the equivalent of filling the Millennium Stadium over 10 times with carbon dioxide emissions.

Rose Thompson, assistant manager at The Grove said: "The Orchard Restaurant is usually quite well lit so we thought we'd dim the lights to create a bit of an atmosphere this Halloween.

"Switching off lights you don't need, is one of the easiest ways you can reduce your carbon footprint so we thought we'd introduce this in a fun way at The Grove.

"By turning down the restaurant lights until the room is dark and lighting candles, we can save on emissions while also giving the place an air of spookiness.

"But it's not only something we can do at Halloween. We hope the night will help our customers think more about the energy they use at home. We all need to do our bit to help reduce Wales' carbon footprint and by making small changes such as this we can make a big difference - and save our on bills at the same time."

The Grove became part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Climate Change Challenge in April 2009. They are competing in a friendly rivalry against The Turf in Wrexham and The Castle Inn in Caldicot to find innovative and fun ways of reducing their carbon footprint and saving money at the same time.
