Lawyer joins board of international group

A partner at Capital Law has become one of only two UK lawyers to join the board of an international network of commercial law firms.

Elin Pinnell, head of employment law at the Cardiff and London-based firm, has been elected onto the advisory board of Consulegis and is due to attend its conference in Toulouse next month (15-18 October) in her new role. She joins nine other senior lawyers from countries including France, the US, Germany and Denmark.

Consulegis was established around 20 years ago to draw together lawyers from across the globe. Membership levels have grown to more than 1,600 from 40 countries and the organisation now holds high-profile conferences at which members can meet, hear speakers from different jurisdictions and forge connections for future work referrals. This, says Ms Pinnell, is a valuable mechanism for getting clients reliable legal support from outside the UK.

She said:

"Capital Law has been a member of Consulegis for eleven years and during this time we have used our connections to service clients' needs for legal advice in countries like Germany and the Netherlands. Through Consulegis, we have access to a bank of trusted advisors who can deal cost effectively and expertly with the overseas elements of clients' property transactions, employment law issues, corporate deals or commercial disputes."

Capital Law's other key player in Consulegis is German-born lawyer Marlies Hoecherl who has already established a name for herself within the network. Two years ago she was appointed to head up its specialist tax and corporate group and she recently spoke at a Consulegis symposium in Hamburg on cross-border debts and alternatives to standard debt recovery litigation.

Ms Pinnell said:

"Marlies has worked hard to develop our connections with lawyers around the world. Our colleagues at other international firms turn to us for advice on UK-based subsidiaries."

During the course of her two-year term as board member, Ms Pinnell plans to introduce Consulegis to younger solicitors at member law firms. This includes sponsoring the attendance of young lawyers at the international conferences, which happen twice a year.

She said "I am pleased to have been elected by my Consulegis colleagues. It enhances Capital Law's profile within the network, and allows me to help shape the group's future direction."
